由于中外文化迥然不同，有些职称、职务的名称及等级划分不尽相同，有的虽然名称相同，但内涵却有差异，因此在翻译时一定要字斟句酌，使职称、职位的翻译准确规范。
1. 中文正职的汉译英
对于职业和行政职务的翻译是要尽量釆有国际化的标准，能借用的则借用，不能借用的要做具体处理。我国的许多职业和行政职务名称在英语里都有国际上通用的功能等值词可直接借用，如秘书（secretary)、推销员（sales clerk)、 经理（manager)、董事长（chairman of board)等。
对于带“长”字、“总”字、“主” 字的职务名称，大体上都可以用 chief，president, head, director, chairman，general 等词结合一些词组，进行表达。
1. 1 些职位名称带“长”字，可选择president, director, head 等这类词表示
（1）用 president
例如：国家主席president；大学的校长president of a university；银行的行长 president of a bank；协会理事长 president of an assodation；法庭的庭长 president of a court 等。
（2）用 director
例如：研究所的所长director of an institute；医院的院长director of a hospital；博物馆馆长 director of a museum 等。
（3）用head
例如：学院的院长 head of a college/faculty；中小学校长 head of a secondary/ primary school；县长head of a county；火车站的站长 head of a station；护士长 head nurse；厨师长 head cook；总教练 head coach 等。
1.2 以“总……”表示的一些职位名称，可选择general，Chief等这类词表示
（1）用 general
例如：总书记 general secretary；总代表 general deputy；总经理 general manager；总代理 general agent；总编辑 general editor 等。
（2）用 chief
例如：总工程师chief engineer；总会计师chief accountant等。
1.3 带有“主”字的一些职位名称，可选择dean, head，Chairman等这类词表示
（1）用 dean
例如：教务主任dean of studies；人事处主任dean of personnel
（2）用 head
例如：外语系主任 head of the foreign languages department；医务部主任 head of the department of medical as ministration；门诊部主任 head of the outpatient department；居委会主任 head of the neighborhood committee 等。
1.4 采用其他词表示
例如：车间主任 workshop manager；客座教授 visiting professor；村长 village head；税务员 tax collector；股票交易员 stock dealer。
